Model for water infiltration in vegetated soil with preferential flow oriented by plant roots

Abstract Purpose There is strong experimental evidence that root systems substantially change the hydraulic properties of soil. However, mechanisms by which they do this remain largely unknown. In work, we made hypothesis a preferential flow soil moisture occurs in directions follow orientation and distribution roots within soil, phenomenon alters patterns. Methods We modified Richards’ equation to incorporate root-oriented moisture. Using finite element method Bayesian optimisation, developed pipeline calibrate our model with respect given system. Results When applied simulated distributions, produced pore-water pressure profiles agreed those derived from saturated conductivity values soils vegetated willow grass. Agreement improved for distributions where segments were oriented more realistic way, suggesting characteristics are consequence flow. Conclusion By incorporating flow, improves ability describe analyse water infiltration through This could help optimise irrigation, forecast flood events plan landslide prevention strategies.
